The Hispanic Source course Cultural Competence: Understanding the Hispanic Patient© helps health care providers acquire the skills to improve health care outcomes of your Hispanic patients. The course is designed to increase your understanding of Hispanic culture.

We offer this course in several presentation formats, so that you can choose the format that works best for your organization. We also offer an option of dramatizing cases using bilingual actors. Course formats include:

• Lecture – 1 hour, with pre- and post-tests
• Interactive Workshop – 1/2 day
• Webinar – 1 hour. Licensing agreements are available.

All formats can be customized to meet your specific geographic market and Hispanic population demographic.

What the Course Teaches Health Care Providers
After taking our course, health care providers will be able to:

• Explain the importance of cultural competence in health care
• Identify the Hispanic population and describe its health disparities
• Describe Hispanic cultural values, health practices and beliefs
• Explain how cultural beliefs shape clinical encounters
• Identify resources for cultural and linguistic assistance

The Hispanic Source training program was developed by nationally-recognized authority and trainer Mariita Arosemena Conley,MA, in conjunction with a team of physicians, nurses, and interpreters from hospitals and clinics.

The course content is designed to comply with:

• CLAS, the federal standards for providing Culturally & Linguistically Appropriate Services
• JCAHO, guidelines issued by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

The content has been reviewed and validated by a team of medical advisors for use by physicians, nurses, social workers, and health support staff. Hospitals, universities and medical societies have used our course as part of their Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.
